Trailer Research

Safe Haven

The sound and music aspects of this trailer apply very much to the genre of the film. The music played in the background of most of the scenes are romantic and calming, suggesting the film will have elements of romance and drama involved. There is no narration to the trailer to explain what will happen in the film but however there is the speech of dialogue between characters, the dialogue subjects changes as it differs from scene to scene. These pieces of dialogue create the stories plot for example "i've had things happen to me in the past" this suggests a dramatic twist to the film, attracting the audience to come and watch the film to find out the twist.

The characters chosen for introduction within the trailer is mainly a man and woman. This not only introduces the main characters and therefore could widen the audience to both genders, but it also hints at the films plot line. The suggestion of romance will attract the films specific target audience. There is also an introduction to an unknown character who they refer to as 'he'. This creates suspense and tension for the viewers and will again attract the audience to view the film. This is because it shows an obstacle in their relationship, making the viewers want to know more about this man and why he is so heard about and scary.

The dark clothes the girl wears at the beginning of the piece when she is alone juxstaposes with the lightly colours bright clothing she wears when around and in contact with the man. This again could hint at the genre to the piece showing that she is happier when with him, making an audience want to know why she was unhappy and upset beforehand.

The titles within the piece also have a significance; The trailer beginnings with the introduction to the title of the film "SAFE HAVEN FROM NICOLAS SPARKS BEST SELLING AUTHOR OF THE NOTEBOOK AND DEAR JOHN" this directs all readers of Nicolas Sparks and so targets their audiences. The best selling also will attract viewers because they known the story-line to the piece is voted very high by others. "THIS FEBRUARY" allows audience to remember to go and see the film when it comes out. At the end of the trailer again the title of the film is shown so it is known to the audience and they remember the name clearly. It also repeats again that it will be around for showing in February.

What is a theatrical trailer?

I think that the idea of a theatrical trailer is very successful because it makes the film known about and so audiences can acknowledge that they may want to go and see the movie. With the release dates being visible the target audience can then arrange to go and watch it. A theatrical trailer will target its target audience as well as widen it because it will tell more of the story and so the audience are allowed to know more about it and decide wether or not they may want to go and watch the film.
I find that the titles on the trailer allows an audience member to acknowledge that I will want to see it. However, a theatrical trailer mustn't reveal too much of the story-line because otherwise the drama and twists will be ruined and so the audience may feel as if they have already seen the film and so wouldn't want to go and watch it in the cinema. Therefore film companies should be very clever with the shots and scenes that they present within their theatrical trailers because they want to make sure they are steal capturing the audiences attention and anticipation.

What is a teaser trailer?

What is a teaser trailer?

I think the idea of a teaser trailer is very good for the film company and its popularity. I would say that teaser trailers do increase the audiences for films because they make the film known and heard about long before it is released. However, if the trailer produces no excitement but flashes some shots of the film this could make the film look boring and so decrease its predicted audience. A teaser trailer therefore is only successful if it shows drama and excitement within the film shots because with out this the film could be portrayed differently than expected.

Pitch Perfect

The sound at the beginning is loud and dramatic, bringing attraction to the trailer from the very beginning. The first speech we hear is 'university' and so we are introduced to the fact that the plot is set in university and college so therefore we apply to teenagers and students mainly. The music is played through the background of the whole piece to add an exciting effect to the trailer and therefore the film. The music played is also the characters singing introducing the fact that the film revolves mainly around singing. Modern music is also played throughout to attract the films target audiences of teenagers The mix of different genres of songs also then widens the audience. This also makes the film sound exciting and entertaining attracting to audience members. The use of well known songs such as 'Mickey your so fine' is used in order to stick in the audiences minds because it is so catchy, they will therefore remember this trailer and the film itself.

The costumes hint at the films story-line because the character is shown in her own clothes to then in a uniform with a group of people. Suggesting they are a professional team, showing that she joins the singing group after joining the university. The make up used on characters isn't too much and applies to teenagers in the modern age, attracting their target audience. We are also introduced to 'Fat Amy' several times through the trailer so it is memorable for the audiences. The props used show the setting, yellow taxis are shown to show that the film is set in America and so may appeal to an american audience as well. Stages, microphones and all props to do with singing and the theatre are used to reinforce the idea that the film is about a theatre group.

The characters are all introduced too through this trailer. The casting of both male and female young people would allow both genders to be attracted as audience members to the film. There is no voice over for the trailer but however we are taken through a journey by the use of the different dialogue. This therefore allows the audience to figure wether or not they will enjoy the film. The film title is shown so the audience know what the film is called and it is now heard of. At the end of the trailer the title 'Coming Soon' is shown creating suspense for the audience and so that they can remember to go and see it at the cinema.

What is a Trailer?

What is a trailer?

It should introduce the actors and actresses involved as well as name the film. Movie trailers have now been put onto DVD and Blu-ray discs as well as on the internet and mobile devices, this is done for even more advertisement of a particular film. A Trailer has to attract the audience in no more than 2 and a half minutes which is the maximum length for a trailer allowed by the Motion Picture Association of America.
